Coding is thinking.
If you're an experienced software engineer, if you've built, deployed and maintained real production systems, I don't need to tell you that the phrases "coding is solved" and "coding was never the hard part" are fake news.Coding is hard. Not because syntax is hard. Not because pressing keys is hard. It's hard because it forces us to think and articulate ourselves at the level of depth and specificity required to create high quality software. If we're not coding, we're not thinking, not at the level of depth required. Some are fooling themselves into believing they can do all this thinking upfront (hello, waterfall) or not at all - just let AI come up with something. Not only are we demoralised, watching our livelihoods and community being dismantled in front of our very eyes, we know - we just know - this is only going to end badly. Tech debt is now being generated on an industrial scale.AI has a place, of course it does. But we're going too far, too quickly. We're being duped into enshittifying our craft so big tech can sell more tokens. It's time to start pushing back. It's time to reclaim our industry. Our craft.

As a software engineer myself, I'm not sure exactly what the final shape of this will be. We'll iterate it together. For now, I'm just looking for like minds. I want to build a community where we can speak up, combine our strength, and hopefully have a constructive impact on the direction of our industry.Pop your details in below and I'll keep you in the loop.
